History and Culture

LCRA's (Lower Colorado River Authority) oldest dam is Buchanan Dam, originally named Hamilton Dam. Renamed for U.S. Rep. J.P. Buchanan, who helped secure federal funds to complete the project after the original builder declared bankruptcy. LCRA completed construction from 1935 to 1937.

The 70-year-old structure is an architectural rarity. Buchanan Dam is considered the longest multiple-arch dam in the nation, stretching for more than two miles. Builders no longer use the design because the amount of labor required makes construction too expensive. Dimensions: 145.5 feet high, 10,987.55 feet long, 215.11 feet thick at the base, 34 feet thick at the top.

Lake Buchanan was the first completed in the Highland Lakes chain, built primarily to store water and supply . Lake area: 22,335 acres; Generating capacity: 51.3 megawatts; Water supply storage capacity: 285 billion gallons; 37 Floodgates.

Travel Tips

A Bus Driver May be Better than a Concierge!
Make friends with any regular bus drivers around your hotel. They're better equipped to make suggestions than most concierges, and are very familiar with local customs/secrets. A good public bus driver can make an entire vacation!
